0200 / OUTER WALLS OF NOVA KASABA

NORTH OF THE SOCCER FIELD

Kelly was two hundred yards ahead of Jason. They refrained from communicating with the Voiceducers as much as possible. If Kelly saw something he did not like, he would drop a miniature infrared chemical light at prearranged points as a warning. Jason saw only one light, a possible mined area, and he went around the other way.

Jason flipped up his NVGs and used the eerie moonlight and shadows to hide in. He checked his trail. There was too much mud to tell he had been there. Kelly left no tracks, of course. So far, so good. No one was out on the side of the town they moved through. This part of the town had been cold for some time. A thought occurred to him.

“Froto.”

“Go.”

“I’m at the northeast side of the town. It’s dead. These buildings could hold thousands of people.”

“So.”

“It’s completely empty. There’s no one here. I bet this is where the people in the soccer field came from. We’re still on schedule. I think some shots and video of Nova Kasaba are important. It might add missing pieces of the puzzle for someone. The light’s perfect, and we can add the pictures to your next transmission at 0345, before we go after the soil sample.”

“Do it.”
